I had the same problem when I started riding a "ride by wire". Just couldn't maintain good friction zone throttle control, and for me the blipping just made it worse. After I installed the Power Commander 5 in an effort to control heat, I found that the throttle response became much better and more like cable. Two birds with one stone.

And riding the friction point might be the correct method, but i personally don't like having the clutch in when i'm making a turn because the bike can fall over if it's not under power.
If you're not riding the clutch in a very sharp climbing turn, you are far more likely to stall and fall over.
Practice finding the friction point on the flat before attempting it in the mountains.
