No argument there, you have more budget than I did. I got a stock used one from a guy who put in the billet stuff, I think it was about $125 complete to my door.

That is cheap, you could add the S&S pump to a stock plate too FYI.
I figure I am going to keep this bike forever, so I spent the money on it, cheaper than a couple payments on a new bike...

While I am in there I plan to do the cams as well and want to use the S&S 509 cam. I am sending it to my local indy to check the crank and if possible I want to go to gear driven cams.

Now I have a friend who works at the local dealer and he claims S&S is junk and to go with the SE instead. I know my local indy also leans towards SE but he also deals with the dealer as well.

Has there been any comparison between the 2 setups? Is there a clear winner?
Seems as though your friend has not been around much, I'd say?

Are you going to do the Andrews conversion cams too? you will have about $300.00 in parts, and gaskets if you go in from the top, like sprockets for the different style chains, and some washers, and a couple bolts, lifter block gaskets, and I am sure I am forgetting something...I don't know how many miles are on your bike , but I have a full set of Fueling lifters that are .001 over size , that I will sell cheaper than you can buy them for, they work well on motors with 50k plus miles on them. but you will have to measure.

Gears are a great option if your going through the lower end, making sure your flywheels are true. If not, go with the hydraulic 07+ system it will allow for more runout and is a proven system.

Although this is true, If I did it again I would stay with the +07 hydraulic system. If I remember right without counting the machine work if required to make the lower end bullet proof, gear cams ar 2x the price.

Just remember that the roller chains are the key , and without Andrews conversion cams, (not sure anyone else makes conversion cams) you will have to run the stamped chain on the cams themselves, which will cause them to wear much more, and maybe faster. I went with the Andrews 21N cam , it is very close to the SE203 cam, mostly just gain torque not hp, which is good for a touring bike.

So basically you are telling me that even with the hydraulic tensioner upgrade it will still fail?
