Our cams smaller diameter on both ends. 06 & up larger die on both ends conversion ram outer dia big, inner small to use in our case with 06 & up plate. Upgrade kits ( at least for sure SE) use old style cam with new chain on 02 up(yours). Hope that helps
Me I had to keep old chain because need that raised area on sproket(in first pic) for the cam pick up to read for M&M system. Those sprockets in second pic in Bag can be used on yours.
So even though S&S makes a cam plate for my year bike but has been revised to only accepts hydraulic tensioners like the 07+ 96" models, doing that and cams for an 88" wont work because I would still have to use my original chain? I need an 07+ cam plate but then I can't use a cam for an 88" motor unless its a conversion cam which means I either have to use SE or Andrews? And if I go with the 07+ cam plate then I need to also purchase new gears to accept the new chain.
No, you can use the new roller chain on yours that's why it comes in the kit. 02 & up can use it. That's why it's confusing some like you can use and like me can't. That's why I took the pic to show u the sprockets & roller chain that go on your cams along with the upgrade roller bearing for the outer rear the front outer stays the same.
The SE inner bearings in kit where cheap ones. So I got the full complement bearings (koyo) from dealer. I also purchased a separate timkin bearing for the front outer from eBay. I wanted the best bearings out there. That bearing is old stock & will be running out. The one in kit would be fine for that, but the inners are cheap, get the best there. The inners when go bad can take out crank from what I've read on this site. The S&S kit may come with the better inner bearings.
Ok let me see if this makes sense. I can order the S&S cam plate and oil pump for my 04, order the redline hydraulic tensioners, get a roller chain kit, and still be able to go with the S&S 509 cams or would I have to use a conversion cam at that point? Thanks for taking the time to help me figure this out.
The roller chain should come in the kit along with tensioner's. Yes any cam for your year bike will work. That's if S&S is the same as the SE which I'm pretty sure it is but maybe better quilty that has been mentioned.
