So basically you are telling me that even with the hydraulic tensioner upgrade it will still fail?
Yes the theory is that a stamped chain like you have on your cams now will eat all the way to the piston, if you go with conversion cams which keeps the same inner bearing size that you have , and uses an 07 and up cam plate, with ROLLER chains, this nearly stops wearing when the tensioner wears to the roller.. You could go with an 07 and up stock cam plate or do the S&S plate , I will still recommend using the S&S pump , as they are awesome.
I did the plate, pump, and Andrews 21N conversion cams. I am really impressed with the setup for sure.
I am saying use a setup with the roller chains , and you probably wont ever have to think about it again.
I am fairly certain that if our bikes came with roller chains , and the old spring tensioners there wouldn't have ever been a problem, but then again the spring type tensioners were brittle, so maybe they would shatter with the rollers hitting them.
The SE kit comes with splined sprockets for roller chain that comes with it. I couldn't use the sprockets & chain on mine with the M&M fuel inj that was on 99-01. Wish I could of used the new roller chain. So I don't think you have to have the conversion cams to use a roller on your bike. But u would if using newer plate.
From what I read about the S&S cam plate is that it is updated for the hydraulic tensioners but isn't the new 07+ design. I could be wrong but that is what I took from the S&S website.
I will talk to my indy and see what he has to say, I don't have the setup to do this amount of work at my place so the indy will get it this winter. If I have to I will probably go with the Andrews 21n cams. From what I researched they will fit my riding style best.
Yes the upgrade for 02 up will change the chain but still use the outer ball & roller & the cam that is in it or one like it. If cam plate can be found from newer like as been mentioned this would be the best route for 02 & up, would be about the same cost, with new cam Just trying to let it be known the options on this. I had a hard time finding g all the Info needed for my upgrade. Even asked on here about the SE plate not working by PO & nobody new about the 99 only year needing a plug for $5. I found that out on the Andrews site. Also dealers where no help.
These are the sprockets that come in the kit. The cam is the newer version that takes the brass outer but won't fit ares as it has bigger inner bearing (06 & up on touring bike), I got that with another eBay purchase (that I used jugs from). The bearings are like the ones in front for upgrade plate, my guess is the S&S would be the same. I also have new take off lifters & pistons (96cc). Lifters & jugs same as 88 pistons not.
