I got this from a buddy who is a fellow wounded warrior, I've only been riding for a year and due to the meds I'm on right now this is about he best I can do for him. So here is what he wrote me "went for a ride harley stalled won't start... thought I fouled a plug, replaced them, replaced wires, replaced coil, looking at replacing crank sensor... gets spark gets fuel and not pulling codes... any suggestions???"
I've been working on cars for years, if he's got fuel and spark, then to me that leaves out air being the only thing I can think of. Anyone else know something that could help?
How does he know he is getting fuel? Just having the fuel pump prime as normal is no guaranty that fuel is getting past the quick disconnect or that the injectors are firing. The usual shade tree check for a fuel problem is to remove the air cleaner and squirt a little gas into the throttle body (starting fluid works but is not recommended) and try to start the bike. If it fires a few times it shows that fuel through the normal path is NOT getting delivered.
Now I get beyond my experience and knowledge. The crank position sensor is a common cause for no start or run. What I don't know is whether you will see a spark during cranking (at random times) with a bad CPS or if the presence of spark proves the CPS is good. How did he check for spark?
How many miles on the bike? Has the fuel filter ever been changed? There was a recall on SOME 08 machines. The canister holding the fuel filter would crack and fuel pressure would be lost when fuel bled from the filter assembly back into the tank. Is there any paperwork to see if that recall applied and if it was performed?
I have an 08 RK and agree to check the fuel lines and filter in the tank. Simple check that worked for me both times. Once when the fuel filter failed and once when the fuel line failed. Remove the gas cap and shine a flashlight inside, Don't try to start it but turn on the ignition so the fuel pump comes on. If it looks like a rainstorm inside, you have a fuel leak inside the tank.
