Was doing a visual check after cleaning. Noticed the dust cover was pushed out on the right side wheel bearing. 5 of the ***** were gone, no warning at all. No noise, no vibration, or clicking, nothing. Was shocked at the bearing when I pull it to replace with new ones. The left side (ABS bearing) was fine, but replaced anyway.
I've been riding since '69 and I've owned thirty-some motorcycles, and I have NEVER has to replace a wheel bearing, mostly because most of them could be dis-assembled and repacked.
My 2000 Ultra had 77,000 miles on it when I sold it and it had the original wheel bearings.
The plan for my '13 CVO Ultra is to install new wheel bearings the next time I replace the tires, which will be somewhere near 40,000 miles, IF they make it 'till then.
I'd much prefer to have this PM done when on my terms as opposed to being broke down in BFE!!!
I checked at 60k+ miles ,all solid. I did invest in an installer and new bearings just to have in case i get a hot deal on new tires. The installer is multi-fit so might need it one day.
I had a buick terraza when my kids were small and same problem except they made it so you had to replace the entire bearing/hub in one piece and that really sucked.I heard the guy I gave the buick to cant find any bearings that last and is having the same issue about every 30k.
hd bearings are junk. been riding 47 or 48 years now and never had to replace a wheel bearing until i bought a 12 streetglide. front ones lasted 2400 miles. i know many people who lost a wheel bearing on the newer bikes (25 mm bearing) at low mileage.
