How many of you do your own 5000 mile serviceand how many let the stealer do it for you and do the valves need adjusting again after the first service? Thanks!
I've had all my services done at the stealer, but I am about to get my 10,000 mile service and after that I am doing my own. It will be out of warranty by then and I'm tired of paying $300-$500 for an "oil change" I will probably let them do the 20,000 mi. service, I think they change the fork oil then.
Valve adjustment? They are hydraulic are they not. Self adjusting? Did the stealer tell you he needed to adjust the valves? He might and I say again he might be funning you
I am about to do my own 5,000 mile service. I have the FIX MY HOG vid on order and I have a service manual. I do not see paying BIG bucks $360+ for them to change oil. I am going to add my own K&N air cleaner and SERT ( anyone with a laptop can do their own SERT with basic download). If you follow the service manual to the letter, save your oil receipts and make some type of checklist of what you accomplished on your service with dates, i do not see where any warranty issues should ever come up.
For a checklist, use the one in the back of the owner's manual. Just put the date and milage you did it, with reciepts and you will be fine as far as any warranty issue's.
after the luck I have had with dealer I always do my own. I got the manual, lift and a couple of special tools and still spent spent far less than one dealer service.
Nothing at all wrong with doing your own service - I've been doing it for years. There are many of us who actually enjoy doing our own service. Just be advised that if you snap a stud and slip and gouge your tank, you'll not have the so-called stealer (a term I resent) to blame. Also, be sure to have the service manual handy along with a couple over-lapping torque wrenches. You might also want to have any gaskets you'll need plus, of course, the correct fluids. We get calls all the time from guys doing their own service - and, we (the "stealers") are very glad to help. Check your owners manual regarding what jobs are supposed to be done during the 1K, 5K, and 10K services. Good luck and let us help if you get stuck.
Y'know, this "stealer" cra* gets old, guys - if you REALLY feel that way, then go buy something else, or do your OWN work - and don't ask ANYONE else (includin' folks on this forum) for advice/suggestions.
If you've got someone rippin' you off, then cool - but from what I read, many of those that complain about "stealers" don't have half the tools they SHOULD have to do the job right, ignore half the stuff that SHOULD be checked - then complain what a "rip-off" it is. I'd HATE to venture a guess as to what I've got invested in my li'l tool set-up, and I ain't got a fourth of what most mechanics have.
So, yeah - I'd like to see a little more respect out there......
