Default So I Checked On Parts Pricing Cam Shoe Change

So for starters -- I replaced the cams shoes once at 52,000 miles. The bike is right at 120,000. So I thought I would take a peack inside and see how things are wearing and since it would open, replace the parts -- I already have the adjustable push rods and tubes from last change --

Dealer Quoted

Cam Shoes --- 70 dollars a piece x 2 = 140

New lifters --- 33 dollars a piece x 4 = 132

One timing chain cover gaster -- ?? dollars

O rings on top of lifers 6 bucks a piece x 4 == 24

the total with tax was right at 315 dollars

Theres got to be a cheaper alternative -- guess I have to go shopping.

I'm not sure why you want cheaper, they were cheap to begin with, thats the problem.

I'm not sure why they are quoting you individual part prices, they have a kit for petes sake. The kit is more expensive, but instead of just replacing the shoes, the kit changes to a hydraulic design, and you get a cam plate as well as an improved oil pump.

Not sure why they would be replacing crappy shoes with crappy shoes.

I dont know why they quoted you new lifters, unless you need them, but thats a separate issue, but I wouldnt be looking to cheap out on the parts for this.

I figured after 70,000 miles it would be time to do the lifters also --- As far upgrading to the cam plate and upgraded oil pump -- that is surely one expense (600?) I don't want right now -- the stock shoes have done well -- but 70 dollar per is a bit ridiculous -- seems like I didn't pay that for both of them the first time

You can also get the other parts at a discount from them such as the Cam Chain Tension Shoes are $53. I did the oil pump and hydraulic shoes on my 2001 Dyna and was very happy. The inner shoe went out at 20K miles. When I sold the bike at 50K miles the new shoes still looked like I just put them in.

You got 120K on your bike and your complaining about spending a lil money on it. My payment is more then that per month. Get the quality parts and ride into the 200K range.

At your mileage,I would think a new high performance oil pump like what is in the Screaming Eagle cam plate kit would be advised.Like what was previously stated, $399.00 and free shipping from a couple of on-line HD dealers.Open your wallet and get on with it.

This is where buying a parts catalog pays for itself (shows gasket / repair kits available by P/N). Can look at RONNIES micro phish. You need new screws on the cam sprockets. And then shopping at Surdyke or one of the other online dealerships. I use CRANE Chevy lifters from SUMMIT and have had no issues in 20K miles. You did not say what year so I can't tell if you have hyd tensioners used 07 and up.
