I just installed a stainless clutch cable high efficiency or whatever on my bike. It is a drag specialties cable. Do I need to lube it? Also do I need to replace the rubber boot at the adjuster? The drag specialties cable did not come with one. Thanks!
Not sure about the Drag Specialties cables but the Magnum Shielding cables I use say they do not need to be lubed at install. I do lube them but only use silicone base lubricants when I do. Petroleum based lubes will turn dark when it gets between the stainless cable and the clear casing
With respect to the rubber boot. I don’t even use the rubber boot on my aftermarket clutch cables. My adjusters are chrome and look good. I know the boot is supposed to protect the adjuster but they get cleaned up every few months when I adjust the clutch and I have had no issues.
I lube my clutch cable with dri-slide every at every service. I have HD diamondback cables. I'm sure you can use your existing rubber boot on the new cable. Others have posted that diamondback cables don't need lubing. I asked a good tech at my dealer and he said to lube it.
I don't lube mine.
Bicycle shops have all kinds of cable lubes, non petro, if you are interested.
The big thing is not just the wire, but the inner cable liner to consider. You don't want to deteriorate that, for sure.
