i wouldn't think the pawl spring is broken at 5200 miles, but you never know. and yes the entire gear set has to be removed to get to it, along with the exhaust and primarys.

Did you recently replace the shift rod. Lot of aftermarket spherical bearing joints out there that are junk. Those joints need to be loose. Sloppy loose does not hurt. It's just part of the travel. When you realize the lever moves 2 1/2", whats a 1/64" more mean? However, a tight plastic bearing joint will never free up.

I have to agree with Ripsaw about cheap shift rod ends! Had the same issue after I changed mine, I would follow the advice about removing the shifter linkage at the transmission and see where it is binding.

Default Shift Rod

A few months ago I replaced the rod end bearings, Heim joints, on my touring bike and went for about a 80 mile jaunt. I tightened the bolts on the shift rod too tight and there was no spring back and lots of clutch slippage. I stopped half way through the journey and loosened them up and everything was hunky-dory again. I did change the primary fluid shortly after this occurred. Checking to see if the shift arm is too tight should be your first move and then if it isn't fixed go into the trans.

That is what the problem was, the rear hiem joint on the shift arm.
