I believe that model is the M & M fuel injection.
From a distance i think you have more than one problem but all are probably simple.
If it is fuel injection then it is M & M fuel injection.
#1 I tell everyone that will listen to look at the crank position sensor CONNECTOR.
The connector is located on throttle side, behind painted side cover, under seat, near saddle bag. The connector is black, pencil thick and is a push and turn connector. Real close to ECM. If loose it will shut-off over bumps. If you worked near rear shock then tie wrap holding it was probably cut or connector moved.
#2 You probably have a burned fuse. Fused can be checked visually after removal with a good flashlight if you have no digital multi-meter.

I don't have schematics for the 96 but if they are wired like the 04 then by the original post his Headlamp, Lights and Accessory fuse may be blown. Hopefully he can just replace fuses and be done, if not a meter will come in very handy.
