iclick: Interesting speculation as to why HD doesn't provide an API rating. Personally, as a relatively new HD owner, I simply assumed it was part of their desire to hold HD owners captive to HD branded products, oil included; by providing an API rating, it might make purchasing alternative, but equal or superior API rated lubricants easier and more attractive than purchasing HD's overpriced lubricants.

Amsoil is one of the largest offenders of the API ratings and most of thier top line products are not API certified. They often use "fake" API service symbols on the labeling. Does this mean the oil doesn't meet the standards, or simply that they did not whant to spend about $300k to certify a single oil formulation? They have a website dedicated to explaining why some products are not certified, but since I don't use it I have not bothered to read it.

Phosphorus is one of the main characteristics of an oil to protect your valve train components. Originally a quality motor oil would have 1600ppm (parts per million) of phosphorous, then in 1996 that was dropped to 800ppm and now it is at 400ppm. When the government mandated that catalytic convertors have a 150,000 mile lifetime the cheapest way to do that was for the automobile industry to demand a lower phosphorous content motoroil. Phosphorous is second to only lead in the destruction to catalytic convertors.

Mobil1 has in excess of 1000ppm of phosphorous in all its visocities I beleive, and this is why they are not classified as energy/fuel conserving oils and thus do not violate the government's CAFE ratings.

I found an interesting article on motor oils for bikes, and the author actually lists what he considers to be the 3 best oils for use in a bike. I only scanned this article and not read in detail, but it appears he at least attempts to justify his conclusions. Might be an interesting read for those here interested in the oil they select.

Thanks for the info swestbrook60. I threw my business card in the drawing and won 4 quarts of RP and a T-shirt. I think I will use the RP inmy SG and use the shirt to wipe up.

I don't know how many of you know who Donny Petersen is but if says it's good then youbetter believe it.

Hard Riding With Synthetic Oil

Anecdotal evidence supports the use of synthetic oil. I put my money where my mouth is. I realize what I am about to relate is not scientific and merely the telling of a personal road trip. Last summer, I was on a run to Canada's East Coast. I work a lot so I dont have much time, which means I have built up endurance for hi-mile fast riding. The daytime temperature never went below 85 degrees and hovered over 90. On the way down, I did about 800 miles the first day from Toronto to Frederiction New Brunswick. Next day, I cruised into Sidney Cape Breton Island, which is just less than 500 miles. I partied one day and then got up at 5:30 a.m. for a blast home. At 8:30 pm that night I pulled into Cornwall, Ontario after riding 1000 miles in excess of 85 mph It was a real hot day and I just stopped for gas. I ate and drank while riding. Going to the washroom was not an issue as dehydration assisted in putting more miles in. I did the remaining 300 miles to Toronto the next morning. My 1999 Roadglide runs like a Swiss clock. I use synthetic oil. Guess what? The engine runs cooler because of less friction. Presumably it will last longer because of less wear due to less friction. And my engine bearings are just fine because they roll in the synthetic oil not skid as the purveyors of fear love to imply. How come the fear-mongers are always trying to turn you off someone else's product to get you to BUY theirs. Remember, 1000 miles in hi-heat and at hi-speed in 13 hours. This is only one of the tortuous trips, for rider and bike alike, that my motorcycles easily endure both Evo and TC88 with synthetic oil.[/b]
