Question regarding S&S Teardrop air cleaner for 103 motor.
I am hoping that someone can help me understand how this air cleaner works...
I want to put a high flow air cleaner on my 15 Road King and really like the looks of the S&S teardrop air cleaner (very classic). As I was looking at it I don't understand how it can move much air. Most high flow air cleaners have either an exposed filter, or there is some type of vent/scoop in the cover so that the filter gets direct air. The S&S teardrop cover completely covers the filter with no vents (appears solid). How does air get to the filter and therefore into the throttle body? Does it really move more air than the stocker AC kit?
Look at the "Slasher/Desperado" version teardrop that's slotted all the way around the front. I have one on my carbed 2002 Softail and it works like a champ. I also went the "high flow air filter adaptor kit". Not sure if they'll work on EFI stuff but worth checking into.
There is about a 1/2" slot all around the backside between the backing plate and the cover plate that it draws air thru. You can get entire kit for the 103efi, I put one on my '12. if you do it, do yourself a favor and vent externally.
It doesnt "move" any air, there's only so much air that can move through the stock throttle body. Really any open air cleaner will be fine, there's no difference in performance. Really its just about the look you want.
I switched from a SE Ventilator to the S&S with no changes other than the perception that it runs smoother because of how the air flows into the intake. I have an FP3 tuner and called V&H when I switched and they had me leave it as is or at most do another autotune which I did. I love the look but be advised, you may want to use hose clamps instead of what they send you as I got some oil seepage from the breather bolts...... and what billieb1954 said up top.
Thanks for the replies. Can someone please explain what you mean by "venting externally?" Is the S&S kit not a good one to get. I want to get a kit that comes with everything I need, and don't need to rig anything to make it work.
Venting externally means to route the hot, oily, oxygen depleted crankcase gas out to atmosphere. The majority of A/C's are EPA compliant meaning they vent the crankcase gasses back in to the A/C. Not the greatest thing for performance and engine longevity, engines much prefer cold dry air.
You can see the different options and styles of external breathers available HERE
If you're looking for a complete turn-key system that does vent externally you can see all the DK Custom Products A/C offerings such as the 587, the 636v and the Optimized Arlen Ness Big Suckers HERE
The final 2 images show you the difference between venting crankcase gasses in to the A/C and the superior approach of venting the gasses to atmosphere.
Hi Everybody new guy here, just bought a 97 road king with fuel injection, I've been lusting for an S&S teardop, if the deal doesn't go through please contact me, being a newbie I cant even seem to pm
