I'm wondering the same thing. It gets so nasty in there but I'm scared to spray anything on it to clean it.

It is amazing how nasty it does get behind those covers, I just used a wash brush and a hose, just like I would on the rest of the bike, it didn't have any bad results and it sure looked better clean. The way I figured it, how could anything be moisture sensitive on a motorcycle, I drive in the rain all the time and for long periods of time.

A universal water soluble bike cleaner and a fairly stiff brush, then wash off. Doesn't look much better, but has therapeutic benefits......

Another product to consider is something like Scrubbing Bubbles made for baths. Think I'd take it easy with the water spray and let it dry before buttoning it up.

You would be surprised at how much dirt will leave after you give it a shot of air from a compresser. I just blow mine out once in awhile and all is well.

I also use an armor-all wipe every now and again when I do a serious detail. About once a month.

Soap (Dawn) and hot water keep that area clean on my bike. Wash under the covers twice a year.
