I have the fixed and it workd fine. To mount it all you do is take the seat off, bolt the bracket to the fender and reinstall the seat putting the backrest in place. the adjustable one needs a bit more effort put into it for install. They do come forward for the passenger to get on and off, just a little bit.
To bolt it to the fender do you drill or is there already somewhere to screw it to??

I searched this topic and read thatthe fixed backrest has a forward lean, whichcan make it uncomfortable. To correct the problem, someowners shimmed the base of the mountng bracketwith washers. Others bent the mounting bracket in a vise.Is thisnecessary with the fixed model, or has HD changed the design?

No drilling, everything is bolt-on......

I've got the adjustable on my Road Glide and like it. It moves way forward for the passenger to get on, has a great range of motion, and comes off in about 3 seconds when I want a cleaner look.

If you can afford the extra $$$ I would go with the adjustable. I use the adjustable with a mustang seat. The adjustability is great and the install is no big deal. In addition, it is easy to adjust while riding and WILL work with heat guards for your thighs.

Go with the adjustable (cable operated). Spend the extra dough or do like me and buy one from a fellow HDF member. It is like driving around in a La Z Boy. Get the biggest and most comfortable one you like. It makes my bike look kind of goofy, but when I put on my stock classic seat, rider's back rest and jet away, it is great..IMO
