Default tutorial for heated grips on 2014 RK?

Hello all

New guy here. Bought a 2014 Road King two years ago after 34 years on BMW's. I bought the factory heated grips today at an open house. Has anybody written out the steps to install on a 2014? Dealer wants $130, which seems reasonable. Not sure if I want to do it myself or just pay them.

Thanks.

Hi 2nd,

Welcome to the forums.

I have another model- on that the wiring was already in place , so just have to make some connections.

but your model may be different, try the search function for a few threads and see if any of that makes sense to you.

As Mike says, searching is a good idea...I use google and type "HDFORUMS (then what you're looking for)" as I find that to work better for me.

Speaking of me, I have the heated grips and they are OK but not great. I find that my fingertips and thumbs don't warm up. If I had to do it all over again, I'll consider heated gloves instead.

I don't know about a RK, but after doing my Limited Low, if someone offered to do it for $130 they'd be my new best friend.

Default HD Heated Grips.....

......are notoriously unreliable.
Just for peace of mind and a scapegoat if they suddenly stop working, I'd definitely have the dealer do it.
Especially if they're only gonna charge $130.00 to do!
Good luck!

Part of the problem for a DIY'er is that Harley tries to make one set of instructions cover every bike from a panhead to a V-Rod. There are like 6 pages to tell you how to hook up 3 wires.

Have you read the instructions? If so & you're comfortable, get some beer....

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I did do a search before posting, and read all the threads I could find. Some sounded like "plug and play" on mine, others more complicated. I think LAB wanted $35 for their video. At any rate, I called this morning and scheduled an appointment in a couple weeks. I figured that way, if there is any trouble with them, better the dealer installed.

I've worn a heated jacket liner for years in cold weather, but never had the heated gloves. Heated grips always did me good down into the 20's. And they're always on the bike.

Thanks again for taking time to reply.

I may have been the first one to post my dealings with installing heated grips on the 14 RK. They are nice and toasty and aside of blowing the inline fuse once, they have given me two winters of toasty hands so far.

First of all, the instructions suck. I remember that vividly. I will try to give you enough of what I remember to get you going.

First of all, did you buy the accesory kit that goes into the canbus connector under the left side cover? You will need that. Next, be ready to pull your gas tank. You will run the wiring under the tank into the plastic channel

After you get the old grips off and the new ones on, then you get to do the wiring. First, locate the 2 pin connector under the nacell, On the right hand grip, remove the two pin round jumper, using a volt meter, test for continuity to the connector under the nacell.

On the left side, run a lead pull for the electrical wires into the first hole and I ran them out the bottom hole of the left handlebar. Then ran into the slot near the handlebar clamp and down the neck.

You will then need to plug in the double female end connector to your wire harness on left side, and cut the other end off and crimp the 2 tiny male pins to the wires, and push them into the probide connector, connect to the two pin connector under the nacelle. Make sure you push in the round two pin on the right grip and you should be good to go. Throw the rest of the junk they supply in your 20 year bin and feel the heat. I usually run in 2 or 3.
