So after installing my new Vance and Hines basic slip-ons, I wondered if I would now pass my local (MA) inspection? According to the MA Registry, bikes built after 1986 have a 99 decibel legal limit . I wonder why muffler manufacturers don’t list the decibel readings, per bike [>:]. I wonder if I will pass. Anyone here failed thier inspection?
I just had mine inspected last Saturday. I've gone to 2 small independent shops in the past 5 years. Neither checked. I have the SEII's on my Street Glide. I called one shop and they said they wouldn't inspect if there were removable baffles.
I had no problem with my 07 SG and Sampson Rolled ovals. I did see my dealer refuse to inspect a guys custum with some type of strait pipe set up. Dealer told him to come back when he had a pipe with Baffles and Directionals on the bike
I call around and I get my bike inspected by a person who doesn't ride. He checks my lights, signals, and horns and sends me on my way. I will not trust my bike to an inspection guy.
If you rad the original post you see the questioner is from MA. Once yearly inspected you receive a sticker on your license plate. Trust me the Gustapo in MA DO CHECK!!
So try an independent shop that has stickers andshow up there as quietly as you can. My local guy refuses folks that roar in, roar out( he remembers you next time) and passes quiet unbaffled types occasionally.
Some Harley dealers can be too by the book even if they sold you the pipes.
You can't blame the dealers for covering their azz. If they give an inspection sticker to someone that has pipes louder than allowed, the state will come after them. Some shops make a note of what pipe you had on when you were inspected in case you swap the pipes after the inspection and then get pulled over.

it should pass....I passed with V & H Longshots with baffles in, still pretty loud. The Registry can be a PITA, they busted a shop for giving a sticker to a bike missing the reflectors on the side of the front forks. So I TAPED mine on with doubled masking tape to pass.
