Today go to down shift from 4th to third & it goes into neutral. Wondering if this is a sign of bad things to come. It's a 99 Electra Glide with 80,000 miles. It also made a slight chirp or bark before that down shifting today. Checked the fluid seamed clear, will change soon to check magnet. Thinking the forks might be worn to be able to go between gears. Don't really no much about them. It was cold today & it didn't warm up the oil till the end of trip even with covering the ultra cooler, hoping that's all it is.
My 98 Road King did the churp thing once as well. About 6 miles later, the transmission gave up all together. The churp was a bearing coming apart and then it got ugly. Mine had 115,000 miles or so when it gave up.
Great news was that there were a lot of guys upgrading their bikes to six speeds at the time. I bought the complete 5 speed innards with less than 5000 miles for 75 bucks off of the forum.
O boy I was actually not wanting to mention there seams to be a new sound coming from the trans even just setting there. Like scraping and slight click.

Might want to jack the bike up and with the trans in neutral (you can also try it in 5th), get under the rear tire and rotate it. Listen for sounds and a belt that is jumpy.
I'd say check the trans magnet but when my main trans bearing failed... there wasn't much bearing fragments... however... right behind the trap door there was all kinds of metal shavings.
At first I spin the tire in neutral and was smooth, then shifted to first and back to neutral then it was clicking almost like every tooth. Will check shifter paw ajustment tomorrow.
If I pull the clutch release cover I should be able to check the trap door bearings. If bad , will the trans have to come apart to change them or can the trap door come off with out the shafts? Thinking I should get a rebuild kit before more damage is caused. It doesn't look like needle bearings come with most kits. Is it the trap door bearings that usely go bad?
In the book it's called a cam follower (detent) is not always going into a groove it will set on the high part of the cam. There is .006 tight end play should be .004 max, but even if I put .003 feeler gauge in there it will still do it. Tried to ajust paw with out being able to get top cover all the way off. When it's not setting on this high spot trying to go into second all sounds and looks good. So next will have to get starter off so can take shifter cam out to reshim end & see if bearings are good in it & ajust shifter paw with eyes on pins
