Correct ohm speakers
If the impedance of the speakers matches the output impedance of the radio, then maximum transfer of audio energy will occur. Any mismatch will cause less audio to be coupled to the speakers. There is no effect, that I'm aware of, that could cause skipping or other similar conditions.

At the top of the page you will see a section in blue with orange printing on the tabs. Select the one that says INBOX and you will be taken to you PM inbox. There you can select from your inbox or your out box. You can create new messages or reply to received messages.
Hope this helps.

Gunkholes is right on this one. It is the amplifier that needs to see a TOTAL minimun load (resistance) .
You can achieve that minimun resistance (load) by different wiring techniquesSeries or parallel .
Amplifier normally has that minimun load rating printed on the rear of the amplifier. It is the eletrical energy (heat)
efficiency transferthat is important.
As the other have said the skipping on your player is not cause by the incorrect resistance.

So is this true about the amplifier slow-death if the speakers are rated lower than the 8 ohm rating of the radio? HogTune speakers are 5.25 ohms. Will my amp section eventually die if I continue powering these?
I suppose you could have a mismatch and not create enough of a heat issue to cause any damage before you shut the radio off and it cools down again.
How many times that can be done is unknown.
My expeirence has been that once a part begins to fail it will gradually get worse and then finally have total failure.
This is also the reason techs have problems finding intermittent failures. Parts never fail at the right time. My company ( Sound Systemsconsulting and design)many times would have to run a product for several hours on the bench just to get it to fail consistanly so we could then find what part needed replacing.
You need to know if the 5.25 rating is for one speaker or the total rating. The next how are the peakers wired?
I have been out of this business now for several years and have forgotten most osf the theory. You really need to speak to someone with more current knowledge. This is especially true with all the new digital products. I am an analog guy. Damn that makes me feel old.

Assuming the amp doubles its output as the impedance halves, you are only looking at a 3dB difference. You do not need to run youramp at the lowest impedance. In fact, thedampening factor increases at higher impedance levels.
In addition, the impedance of adriver changes dramatically depending upon the frequency being reproduced. Impedance also increases as the voice coil heats up. At certain frequencies, your amp may see a 20+ ohm load.
I use 8 ohm drivers in my vehicle which, once you take into consideration the increased efficency rating, has the same output as my 4 ohm drivers. The payoff is that my amps run cooler and last longer.

I guess that I am a real dummy but why would a solid state device begin to skip. it is not a cd.
by the way the speakers will not affect how your mp3 player works. the only things that would cause your mp3 player to start to skip that I can think of is a malfuntioning mp3 player or maybe a LOT of vibration and weak return tension on the mp3 buttons. if its a handlebar mount mp3 you might want to try putting it at a different place on the handlebars. are you sure its the mp3 skipping and not the amps cutting out

FullDrawMike ,,,,,,
after reading your post again ,,,,,, it leads me to believe that it may very well be the speakers causing the cutting in and out ,,,,,
that is because you say it happens with time ,,,,,, and I am going to go way out on a limb here ,,, because I don't personally know exactly what is inside Harley's handlebar mounted MP/3 player ,,, but I believe it uses a memory card ,, which means there are no moving parts to cause skipping ? ,,,,,
that being the case ,,, I believe your radio's amplifiers are heating up as you start riding and after a certain period of time, they start to cut in and out ,,,,,,
and yes ,,,, I believe it is caused by the 5.25 ohm ? speakers you are using regardless of brand ,,,,,,, Polk, Hog tunes, whatever ,,,
I will also be brutally honest here and tell you that the J&M speakers we sell for your application that say 8-ohms on the back are probably around 7.2 ohms, depending upon frequency ,,,, as "HEY" ,,, I want all I can get also ,,, that is what sells ,,,, volume and clarity ,,,,
However ,,,, I have sold speakers for Harleys every year since 1989 and I know that I can get away with 7.2 ohms on the 1998-2005 system ,,,,,,
that is my best guess ,,,,,
