Thanks foxtrapper. HD was my first thought, but oddly they sell different sizes in the detachable mounted windshield ($300+), and the replacement windshield. I was considering an 18", but they don't sell a replacement in 18". Also, my HD shield cracked under normal use, I didn't hit anything. Probably high speed vibrations, HD warranty does not cover windscreens.
Thanks bigheadted. Now I may consider the Billboard again, was thinking the 16.5" might be a tad short, and the 19.5 a tad high. Maybe I'll put some tape on my screen at each level and go for a ride. Nice. The fork air baffle works for me, that blast of air coming through is gone. I like the fangs too, kind of like the look as well.
Another option is your local glass shop. they have LEXAN and can make one ot get a hunk and do it yourself.
I did with a nice light smoked piece and it turned out great.
Do not use plexiglass or a Memphis Shades they shatter.
I took my 22 adult air rifle to some old beat ones and a trimmed piece of lexan. The HD and Lexan took hits no problem with only a dent A Memphis Shades piece shattered in many pieces what would a rock at 120 mph do ??
I am 5Ft.7In. tall, I put a 18In. Long Rides Shields on my old Road King, maybe look at there 19In.
The 18In. worked well for me, you want the top of the windshield to be as high as the tip of
your nose. That so the re-curved windshield can put the air flow just at the top of your helmet.
I've been meaning to try an LRS slightly shorter than the factory windshield. If you can catch the sales they often run, would be hard to beat value wise. Seems to be a good product from what I read.
I have the Clearview recurve in a stock height. Top comes to just at eye level for me. I get no buffeting with just the shield, but can feel it about 3"-4" above my head when I put my hands there.
Clearview is made of Lexan and is thicker than the HD shield. Great quality and no distortions at all at the curve. They're also a Forum sponsor, but not sure if any discounts for members. They also have a try-it and return it if not satisfied policy. Just install with the protective cover still on and try it out.
The stock windscreen on my 2103 Road King cracked at one of the mounting holes, and I need to replace it. I am 5'11" and the stock is about 2" too tall for me to see over without stretching. I don't like that when the screen gets buggy, or in the rain. I'm considering one of these options:
1) Klock Werks Billboard Flare 19.5" (tall)
2) Clearview Recurve 18.5"
3) Long Ride Shield Re-Curve Elite 18"
I'd appreciate any comments on buffeting, eye-height, if the wider Klock Werks offers additional protection for the hands, and if the recurve causes much distortion.
I found a lot of positive comments on these brands, but would appreciate any specifics, especially from someone about my height. Thanks!
Cheers,
Doc
I'm 5'8" and the stock HD windshield on my 2010 RKC always seemed about 2" too tall for me. Finally got around to replacing it last year with a LRS 16" recurve. Its perfect for me. The recurve works well, and even though I can see over the shield, It directs the airflow over my head. No problems on the highway at 70+mph.
They are a forum sponsor and frequently run great sales. I believe there's one on now.
I liked it so much I got one for my Deluxe...same size, same result.
Distortion hasn't been a problem on either bike...and the recurve works great. I don't usually wear a helmet.
When windshields crack at the mounting holes, it's usually caused by overtightening the hardware. Use caution when installing the new windshield.
I'm about an inch shorter then you. I had bought a 18" clear hd shield that I used on my cvo king for the longer rides. I looked over it but it stopped the wind and bugs. I still have it sitting in the closet if you're interested pm me. It's QD with the three pocket bag mounted on it.
I just bought a Klock Werks flare for my Heritage. The difference between it and stock is remarkable. The buffeting is gone, completely. I only have about 200 miles with the new windscreen, but so far, it is perfect.
Did anyone notice that the thickness of the clearview shield is a bit thicker than the LRS ....but i have both Clearview 18" 75% dark with the mail slot recurved and an LRS 18" 17% tint with the recurve.....didn't see any difference. Chose your preference.
