I had them replaced on my 2000 Ultra when I had the "95" inch Big Bore kit installed at 39,000 miles and they were worn.
Later on, I had the S/E Hyd Kit installed at 75,000 miles and again, they were worn but still intact.
The danger is that when they start breaking up, the debris can block engine oil flow and then you have can have really serious engine issues.
I met one guy who's tensioners broke up at 25,000 miles on an '03 Fatboy and he had to have a new engine installed.
His dealership had always serviced his bike and they had never even suggest and inspection, or replacement of the tensioners.
All I will say is that changing them, or having them changed now, especially considering your 40,000 miles, would definitely be a prudent decision.
As some say, this is a "ticking time bomb" and you never know when it may go boom!
I'm hoping I get real lucky and the upgrade is done...but that's never my luck.
