Default Chrome fork lowers install question

Installing my chrome lowers and installing a 1" burly brand drop kit tomorrow on my 09 street glide, is it necessary to remove the inner and outer fairing or is there a way of removing the forks without removing the fairing or what is the easiest way of going about this?

On my Ultra I removed the ignition switch and unplugged and removed the bottom panel. You can carefully remove the top caps on the tubes and tube clamp bolts without removing the fairing. Obviously the wheel, fender, and calipers must come off, but your question was about the fairing.

No need to remove inner or outer fairing, need to remove dash panel. Do you have a service manual?

I only removed the front shell on my fairing to do this same job because my bike has a fender tip light.

The plug for that light was up inside the fairing.

Other than the cover under the ignition switch, you should be able to get at everything else you need to without much trouble, once you remove the wheel, brakes, etc...

Outer fairing is simple to remove and it makes the job a heck of a lot easier. 7 screws altogether and remove the windshield and unplug the headlight and off it comes. Cover the front fender first with a thick towel in case you slip with the fairing. Then the lower front panel comes off easily allowing access to the lower tree bolts that clamp the tubes on. Trying to do that job without removing the outer fairing will just make the job more difficult.

Make sure you have the right socket for the top bolt because you will need to torque it back on and I would break loose the bottom bolt before you slide the tubes out this just helps in the end so you don't have to put them in the vise.

I'll share my way of doing it... Remove the ignition switch and panel (might want to put the switch back in after the panel is off). Spray some WD-40 at the top of the forks around the triple trees. Choose a side and remove caliper. Lift bike and remove front wheel. Support front fender with a floor jack and use something like a cushion in between jack and the rear of the front fender and remove the two fender bolts from the same side. Remove Fork cap. Drain that leg (remove the 6mm allen bolt). Once drained, loosely install 6mm bolt then loosen pinch bolt and slowly lower leg until it clears the triple tree. Once you're finished doing whatever your doing with it, re-install it in reverse order but leave the fork tube cap off for now. Do the other side. Make sure 6mm allen bolts are tight. Reinstall the front wheel. When putting fluid back in, divide the total ounces by 4. Put 1/4 in at a time (both forks) and push down on the forks a few times. Repeat this three more times (this makes sure you get the air out and the fluid has circulated). Put the fork caps back on, panel, then switch. I did not list each and every step, some are just implied (for example, remove the 6mm bolt before trying to separate the lower from the upper). Works for me, may or may not work for you...
