Then, it's the battery, connections or the actual big contact in the starter. Not sure what you call a big click but could be what I call the little click at the relay on the fuse box,

I would start at the beginning of the starter repair you performed or someone helping you performed. I definitely wouldn't guess how it did or didn't go together. Get a service manual, It will be of great assistance. I have read through the post a few times to be sure I was getting the problem right. I think you have several things going on. The starter hasn't been correctly assembled. The starter needs to be removed and this task needs to be completed. I would then start at your battery/relay/solenoid and find out what isn't supplying the needed power to energize the starter.

Default rewiring my 1986 classic

Bike has been sitting for years got it running but hard time to restart going to replace the wires to starter and battery. What gauge wire would be best to use.

I would start with replacing plugs, wires if its been sitting like you said. For $hits and giggles, pull the 3 screws off the solenoid cover, WARNING MAKE SURE THE BIKES IN NEUTRAL. turn on ignition and kill switch and push the plunger. If it cranks normally and even starts your solenoid may be to blame.
The solenoid has a "pull in coil" and a "hold in coil". Im thinking the BIG clunk you said you heard may be the pull in coil. Might be wrong but you have nothing to loose. While you have the cover off look at the contact points and armature.
