I need a new starter gear for my oem starter on my 08 SG. I see replacements online but haven't been able to find any threads if its possible to swap just the gear on a factory starter. I recently replaced my compensator and saw the starter gear chewed up but the big ring gear is ok. Thanks in advance!
Is it self explanatory on how to change it out of the factory one? You just pull the starter and remove the gear assy? I've never done one....
Starter needs to be disassembled to replace gear easy job. disconnect battery and pull starter. Have a table or bench and lay your parts out how you remove in a line clean the starter up and reassemble make sure to get the new o ring. for the head of the starter for the primary cover so you don't have to remove it again for a leak.
The whole starter drive is a little more complicated but you can get these and maybe do it from inside the outer primary. If not just pull the starter and not disassemble it.
Best to have service manual handy, also try to take a razor blade and cut the powder coat on the starter where it comes apart to avoid chipping it off. Avoid pulling the armature out of the starter at all costs, it doesn't need to come out to replace the starter clutch and a lot more work is involved should you pull it out by accident.
This is one I wrote up for my 09. I think the 08 and before starters may have a screw holding them in under the primary but the starter I would think would come apart about the same. Pretty easy job. Good luck!
You may want to look at "All ***** Starter Drives" they are full ball bearings. Much better than stock (one of the few after market) Your lucky you don't have the older version starter, there's a lot of parts to replace and align. PITA
