If it's by wire it could a number of things. Position sensor, fuel pump, filter are what pops to mind right off.
If it's new enough to be tbw the it's probably got a way to read trouble codes. Might be a good place to start.
If it's been sitting for some time and the fuel has degraded then it could be that simple. The simplest solution to a problem is usually the correct one. Since we don't know the details like if it's been sitting, how long since it's been run or was fuel preserver added before parking the bike we can only speculate till the cows come home?
Turned out her bike was a 2006 Night Train. Fuel Injection, but cable throttle. Couldn't find the problem, trailered it to the dealer. Ended up being some grit in the fuel valve where the disconnect is at the bottom of the tank. Apparently the valve wasn't opening completely and the engine was starving for fuel. Tech said it wasn't the first time he's seen it.
