Default Duals vs. Stock How much difference??

Ok...I've seen lots of posts about stock vs. true duals, but have noticed the following:

True duals give you a more balanced sounding exhaust system.
True duals generate less heat on the right side of the bike.
True duals look better than the stock pipes.

...and probably a host of other positives.

Now, I keep hearing that the true duals may or may not give you a loss of tourque. Some people say it's not noticeable, but other say it is. If there *is* a loss of tourque, how much are we talking about? If it's minimal, then I can live with that to a point. If I lose 5 ft/lbs of tourque on a 10 ft/lb upgrade, isit really worth the 50% loss going with the duals?

Does anyone have some information regarding the approximate gain/loss of tourque/HP when going from stock to true dual setup?

I absolutely love my V&H ovals on the stock pipes right now. Debating whether to go true duals now or not...[sm=teetertooter.gif]

Cheers!

Bob

I got my true duals because of the sound, and looks. I will be doing more to the engine in the future, but am not concerned with getting every ounce of torque from the pipes. (I don't think that there is a big loss of torque, just a potenial loss compared to the 2 into 1) I like the balanced look & sound of the true duals and thats whats most important to me.

Is this true? I would think that a cross over would give you a more balanced sound, not a better sound but a more balanced sound.

To be honest, who knows? I am only going by the feedback of what others have stated. I would tend to think that if you had true duals, each exhaust pipe/muffler combination would be giving out sound/exhaust from each individual cylinder, not borrowing from the crossover. Others with more technical experience than I should be able to answer that question. But then again, it's the old "Is the glass half full, or half empty" adage. There's probably no "right" or "wrong" answer the the question or statement.

Regards,

Bob

Balanced, as in the sound comes from both sides of the bike. Yes, you can tell. I gives the bike a more "traditional" Harley sound. IMHO

There are alot of threads on the true duals. I had a set of V&H on an 01 RK. I did not see any difference in the heat issue. Felt the same to me. I had S/E slip ons and actually preferred the sound before the true duals. Didn't notice any loss/gain in HP/Torque. To each his own. I would spend the $ on a sure bet increase in performance before I did the true duals again.

Just got my TD's, Big sucker and PCIII. Runs cooler, faster and sounds great. I love it.

Unless you have a major power the stock headers can produce more power on the mid to lower rpm range but you must run a good muffler. Try Khrome Werks slipon's, you can buy the mufflers with the right baffles for most any power level and they look stock. Stock headers are good up to around 100 hp. Most of the after market pipes make better hp but look at the rpm range that you ride in.. If you build your ride with time, you can change to a good header like bassani 2 into2 header. and up grade the baffles .. A 124 s&s will run through these mufflers

75-80% of the exhaust comes out of the right muffler with the remaining 20-25% coming out the left side muffler on a stock exhaust........is that balanced?

True duals will give you the balanced "stereo" exhaust note out the back, but at the expense of some low end torque loss.

There is a great post over on vtwin forum showing the difference between a 2-2 system and a 2-1 system. Both have the same peak numbers, but the 2-1 has way more area under the curves for a much better performing bike.

Here are my dyno sheets before and after duals. Same slip-ons.

My suggestion? Go for it.
