Default Replace Primary and Clutch Cover - HELP

Hope my question isn't too stupid. I bought a narrow primary and clutch cover like is stock on a Low to put on my Ultra Limited. Do I have to drain the primary to replace it.

I've removed the cover before when changing the fluid, but I'm talking about the entire external primary.

Thanks. And don't call me stupid!

If I understand your question correctly, yea you do need to drain it to remove it.

Well, technically you don't but it will make a heck of a mess.

You don't have to. Once you take the cover off it'll drain itself. Have shop towels and oil dry on standby.

YOU don't have to drain it, the earths gravity will pull it toward the center of its mass. ^^^ what he said...

Thanks guys. I'll drain it via the drain plug before removing it.

Even doing that there is still a lot left in there. It will make a mess.

Remember you will be doing a dry fill the first time. The narrow primary is a 34 oz wet fill. Filled with bike straight up. The larger cover is the reason.

After draining, I tuck a rag lengthwise between the bottom of the inner primary and the frame and then a rag on the floor under that. The remaining fluid that spills out is then caught without making a mess.

I did the same cover swap, I love the narrow one. I used a new primary cover gasket and I think I re used the old rubber derby cover gasket. No leaks.

So how much fluid to you add? Notice another poster referred to a "wet fill" v a "dry fill." I don't want to over or under fill. And I don't know how to check the primary level. So again, HELP!

Thanks guys
