Not sure what exact route you are taking, but prepare yourself for some HUGE pot holes while traveling through Illinois. I have been up here for a few weeks and can't wait to head back to SW Florida Monday morning!
Extra ammo really, hope that's a joke. Essential's is the title so I'll say it's what's you personally place the value "I can't do without " Mine are things like a route my wife has, and stay in touch during the day. PPE, lack of can beat you down as mentioned. For me the ride is where it's at, so I like to try new routes, freeway time you seem to miss so much of what is around. I have learned a lot from advice of others here, the one I like the most is lay out everything you plan to take, cut it in half...... There are stores along the way, kinda made sense.

I used to take old underwear and socks then after their use trash em and less dirty clothes to tote around. Small air compressor w/tire string plugs. Ibuprofen.
+1 on the long sleeve shirts - get the lightweight workout wicking kind.
Carmex for lip balm. Cliff or Kind energy bars to eat at gas stops. Protect your credit card in foil pouch; just did cross-country trip in May and had credit card fraud issues after we got home and buddy had someone charge $150 to his card at the truck stop while we were still there. Roll your clothes and put in large zip-loc bags, one for each day; less to take into the motel each night. As others have said... have fun and ride safe!
Warm clothes. Milwaukee is on the lake. If the wind comes from the east you'll need them. I know, I used to live there.
+1. I rode through there in July a few yrs ago and night time temps were mid 40s. Day time highs were low 60s. Keeping in mind I'm from Fl so these were dead of winter temps for me.
