I apologize if this question has been addressed before, but I could not find an exact match for my symptoms. My 2000 Ultra Classic with 36,000 miles just all of a sudden started sputtering when I first crank it up to leave to go to work. But after about 5 minutes on the road when it warms up I guess she smooths out, same thing in the evening only not nearly as much as it is already pretty hot outside here in Louisiana. The only thing different that I have done is filled up the bike with gas, drove it about another 20-30 miles then the next morning is when it started happening. Any Ideas?
injected or carbed? if it has the MM injection it might need a cleaning. Behind air fitler, in throttle body opening are 2 small holes, about 10 and 2. Spray carb cleaner or SeaFoam into those 2 holes until it get clear. Injected has an IAC that gets dirty. When my injected 01 did that, I cleaned IAC and was good for a couple more years.
It is injected, I do remember that evening a dump truck was coming off of I49 construction site and I drove through a huge dirt cloud. Could that make it sputter that quick?
like u need to get a air filter & plugs if they are not clean looking. One of the first things I did was get a filter, tuner & muffler. They run leaner when cold so if it has after market muffler then it will need a tuner. Also wires if they look stock.

Thank you for the tips so far. I got home late from work and decided to check my air filter and really couldn't tell how dirty it was, I wiped it down and bumped it on the concrete a couple of time then wiped out the mounting plate. The next morning it didn't sputter nearly as much. So I bought the K&N cleaner kit and cleaned it thoroughly last night. I got one tiny sputter this morning coming in to work. Gas is getting low again, will still put some cleaner in fresh tank of fuel and think I will change spark plugs as well. But I really thing the air filter was the main culprit. My side by side last year almost quit running because of a clogged filter. Very similar symptoms only much worse with the side by side.
Yeah, the tank is getting low of gas again and the low fuel light came on, my bike is sputtering and popping for the first couple of minutes of my ride then smooths out as if nothing is happening. It appears to be idling a little rougher. Going today to get new spark plugs and will add some lucas cleaner when I gas it up with the highest octane I can find. I cleaned the filter and it really seemed to be the issue at first still could be part of the problem may need to buy a new one.

A couple of more things to look at.
Check the intank fuel lines, when the fuel level is low. Look inside the tank when the bikes running. If you see or hear fuel spraying, you need new lines.
Also the fuel filter may need replacement.
I swung by the Harley Dealer and picked up some spark plugs and some startron fuel treatment. The spark plugs were black with carbon build up. So I replaced them and then went and filled up my tank and added some starton and went for a ride to run my gas through. Not one sputter it ran great. Same thing this morning going to work. Not one sputter. Will continue to ride and see if it does it again. Hopefully it was just the combination of getting bad gas and it needing a spark plug change.
