Default Oil Temp???

Just picked up my new 07 Ultra last week with Rinehart True duals, Stage 1 and an oil cooler.
The air temp outside is only 85 degrees but I noticed the oil temperature nevers gets over 190 degrees. Seems a little low. Starting to have doubts about the accuracy of the HD temp gauge.
Anyone else experiencing oil temps this low???

I don't have the cooler yet and I'm in Texas and I see temps in the 210 range with the syn3 oil around town.

If the sensor is spliced into the oil line at the cooler then you'll have lower readings like that cuz that's where it's coming out of the oil cooler. If the sensor is in the bottom of the oil pan (the better place IMHO), then temps read more true and higher (like in the 200-230 range)

Thanks for the info. Will look tonight and see where the Stealer installed it.

On my 2007 Ultra I had the dealer install a Premium Oil Cooler Kit (P/N 26155-07). It has a thermostat that opened at185°F. He also installed two oil temperature gauges. One in the Bat Wing (P/Ns 75265-04 & 26133-07) and one in the oil dipstick that reads out both oil temp and level (P/N 63046-07).The bat wing gauge has never gone over 115F even though I did 300 miles at 80 mph with temps running 105F--the dipstick managed to read 231F. The dealer checked it all out and everything is working according to spec--the dealer checked with Harley Australia who then checked with Milwaukee who said that is the way it is....because the batwing gauge sensor is on the return cool side of oil cooler. A stupid design.

So the dealer switched the hoses around and now the sensor is on the engine hot side of the cooler...but its just turned winter here and on my first 150 mile ride the engine never got hot enough to open the thermostat. The dipstick only got up to 190F.

Bottom line, buy the harley extended warranty rather than the gauge....the cooler works but only when you are moving....

Never ever install the temp sending unit near the oil cooler. you want as near true engine temp.

190F is about right if you're riding in cold weather.

Had the Stealer replace the worthless air temp gauge with an HD oil temperature gauge. Figured if I spring the bucks to install the cooler, I could afford an oil temp gauge.
