Ok this is probably a dumb question, but I am going to ask it any way. Is the very cheapest Ohlins a little better, or a lot better, than ten year old stock touring shocks?
To address the OP's original question...
The very cheapest Ohlins is a lot better than ten year old stock touring shocks.
Ohlins #2 adjustable made a world of difference on my new RGUCVO. It is my first aftermarket suspension purchase after 55+ yrs of riding motorcycles. For me it was worth it and I would easily do it again. I spoke to Howard, answered his questions and he built me a great set of shocks for the new bike. Hope this helps.
I have a Street Glide Special with the "Premium" shocks. They are ok. I also have a BMW K1600GT I picked up the other day. The suspension on that bike is outstanding. If course it has more than two inches of travel. I'm looking into the Ohlins now. I have an email into Howard. Interesting to note that both bottom out on a bad stretch of road on my way to work. If the bump is big enough, any shock will bottom out.
My Revo-A's retail for $899. I bought them at a discount for $750. I may be selling them if I am able to satisfactorily dial in the 13" HD hand adjustable premium shocks that I bought on this forum.
From my experience,so far, I'm finding that all these shocks ride very similar.
They all copy from one another. There's only so much innovation they can build into these shocks with limited travel.
After all it is a 2 wheel vehicle. Not like a four wheel cage with independent suspension.
The roads are so bad in NJ my cage even rides rough. Lol
Hey 6 gun here to say thank you all for your input. I have about 500.00 saved up, and by this time next year, I shall be riding without pain in the lower back.
My stock 12" shocks were not up to the task with our roads up here. I have a bad back as well which makes things worse. I bought a set of Howard's cheaper Ohlins shocks (2-2B) and it was literally like night and day difference. I couldn't be happier. No more harsh ride or bottoming out. Best thing I ever did to my bike.
