Default Voltage - 2003 RKC

Yesterday I was out for a ride and stopped for a coffee. It was warm out but I didn't hammer the bike. Just cruising. Went to start it and it sounded as if it rolled over slower than normal. It always starts anyway but I thought that it sounded odd. I got home shut it down and immediately started it again. Still slightly slower but did start. I put a voltmeter on the battery and idling with the driving lights on it read 12.82V. I reved it up and it came up to 13.1. I thought it would normally be around 14 at idle cuz I checked it one time and I remembered that. Just wondering, what should a 2003 Road King Classic read on a volt meter hot and idleing? I put a tender charge on it and it took about 45 min when normally after a ride it will green light in about ten. It was a hot sticky day yesterday.

I checked the connections and they are tight and clean.

You may want to check a few more things, stator output, have the battery load tested, ground connections ...
Good Luck

Vernal pretty much laid it all out on the table! The only other thing I would throw in to your decision making process would be to consider how old your current battery is. I have no idea of where in the world (climate) you live in, but, a constant hot climate (such as FL) would weigh in as to my decision as to how often to replace a battery. Heat is your enemy!

BTW - As well as battery connections, make sure to check your ground cable (frame) connection as well as starter connection.

so I went home this morning from work to have another look and put the volt meter on the battery. I had it on a tender all night and after three hours of siting it was reading 13.08 VDC. Full charged. I started the bike and idling with all the lights on read 14.2 VDC. That's what it has always been so I'm thinking this could have been a fluke. I did yesterday snug the ground to battery up. it was 3/4 of a turn loose. Ill have to keep an eye on this to see. If not then thankyou for the steps, that will be my next endevour
