An inadvertent pinch or pull could break or ground the center conductor. An Ohm meter will tell you.
The tall rear antenna should give you the best signal once you sort out the wiring.

Changed out the wire in question. Everything works great. Haven't had a radio that worked correctly since November when I removed the tour pack. This is nice . Thanks to all that responded.

Antenna wire
The antenna wire from the radio to under the seat was bad. Probably from old age and how I had it wadded up under the seat. Went up to advance auto and got a slightly shorter replacement for five bucks.
The bracket is just a piece of mild steel, with a quarter turn twist, so it can mount on the saddle bag bracket vertically, then turn horizontal to hold the antenna. I did sand and buff the hell out of it so it would look decent.
