Electra Glide to Road King Conversion
Wanted to share my recent project that involved me rebuilding a crashed Electra Glide into a Road King... Read a couple threads in the forums of other guys doing the same conversion (or considering it) and it got me motivated to take the challenge. I currently have a 2012 EG so I figured it wouldn't hurt to try something new...
About me.... I switched over from street bikes to Harley's almost 2 years ago and never looked back. I have zero experience building Harley's but was always pretty handy working on other things back in the day like VW Bugs etc... So after reading through hundreds of threads stating "GET THE MANUAL", I decided to do just that. $70 bucks off Ebay and it was worth its weight in gold! Between my new HD bible and a subscription to the "FixMyHogChannel" on YouTube, I was good to go! I also picked up a few new tools along the way that made the job a little easier as well.
About the bike.... The project bike was a 2009 Electra Glide. I picked the bike up from a buddy of mines for $3300 after he went down (he's ok). There was no frame damage but everything else was pretty banged up.
My goal was to build this bike on a budget. So my primary source for used parts was Ebay and the So Cal Cycle Swapmeet (aka Harley Swapmeet) in Long Beach CA. The event is held on the last Sunday of every month. The place is literally a gold mine filled with every part imaginable and hundreds of HD enthusiast. Each visit was like a treasure hunt and took me about 4 months to gather all the parts I needed for the build.
The most important item purchased was a 2009 RK wiring harness ($250). After reading several threads and talking shop with several guys at the swapmeet, I was convinced it was the best way to go. Cutting, splicing and tucking all the batwing wires would have been a nightmare!! Once I got the wire harness installed, it was smooth sailing from there.....(Sorta kinda lol). Here are a few pics from my 5 month journey.

Did the front end with new forks, EBay Road King headlight, saddlebags and windshield, Craigs list front fender, Dakota Digital speedo (where the fork lock used to be,) and a few assorted odds and ends. I used the existing wiring harness.
With my $2000 buy back I've got about $4500 in this one (but it sure as hell doesn't look as good as your ride!) On the up side, she's reliable as can be and just passed 160,000 total miles.)
