Hey guys Ive been on here a while but havent ever posted, but I need some help/advice on my '07 roadking
Yesterday I was about half way through a 3 hour ride when the shift lever fell off the transmission. I managed to get it back on but it fell off again as soon as i shifted once so I decided to put it into 4th gear and burn a little clutch to get going and shift into 5th once at speed.
The real problem started once I got into town and had 3 light to get through and a left hand turn to make it to my destination. first light (also on a little incline) was tough to get going but with a lot of reving got going. second light little easier to get going and it seemed like the engine started runnig smoother quicker . Then as I came to the third light I noticed it was slightly harder to pull my clutch in and when I released I could rev the motor without any change in speed. I was able to coast the rest of the way and made it to my buddies house. At which point we drove to the closest harley dealer and bought a new likage assembly.
Now I cant get my bike into any gear. Ive tried shifting with the bike off, both clutch in and not, shifting with the bike running, both with clutchin and not,and shifting while the bike is being pushed with and without the motor running with and without the clutch in and out.
The shifter moves like Im shiftin and I can find the neutral light but im at a loss for what to do next. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I would pull the inspection cover on the primary and have a look at the clutch. Try adjusting. You may have completely gone thru the plates, if so I think you can put a new clutch pack in thru the inspection cover and not pull the outer primary.
Frankly I don't see any alternative than to remove the outer primary cover, to inspect your clutch. If you feel able to tackle that yourself then get a factory service manual first, so you know what you are letting yourself in for. Otherwise seek out a local indy to do the job for you.
I'm sure your clutch is gone. I have had my shifter fall off like that before. The solution to getting home is to stuff a rag down between the shift arm and the inner primary. It will hold the arm on the shaft but still let it rotate. If it's wedged in there pretty good the rag won't go anywhere. Maybe this will help somebody else.

That's good info. Always good to have a short term fix for stuff like this to get us home. I usually keep a universal automotive throttle return spring in my tool bag. I had my lever come off the trans years ago. Bent the throttle spring around the lever and hooked it somewhere else(can't recall) to keep tension on it. It actually held for some time until I could get it in the shop.
