Default Tuner Vs. Remap

I know this is an overdone topic, but I searched and can't find what I was looking for. Until getting the RK all my previous bikes were metrics. In order to change intake/exhaust, a separate tuner like a PCV was required. With the HD's the dealer can do a remap as part of stage 1 or when you change a component that requires retuning. So, what is the advantage of buying a tuner over just having a remap done? I guess if you want to tinker with settings or downloads, but for me I just want it set to run optimally with what I will be putting on and that's it.

I am not even sure that the dealer would do the download anymore. Since you're in Canada they might. The downloads just throw more fuel at the issue with no real regard to how what you changed effects the bike. A tuner like the Power Vision and Fuel pack can be loaded with a variety of maps and if you want set to auto-tune your fuel map by reading your O2 sensors.

The dealer download will revise your tune so it stays EPA compliant, which you may well be happy with. An aftermarket tuner can optimise the tuning of your bike, which takes it away from EPA regulations. The more mods you make the more necessary that type becomes.

Here's the advantage of 3rd party solutions: the dealer download/stage 1 map is a complete waste of money.

For roughly the same amount of money, you can get a Fuel Moto Microtuner, with free map support for life from them. Or you can spend a little extra for a Power Vision or any number of good aftermarket tuning solutions.
