I recently bought a 2001 Electra Glide. The engine runs very rough at an idle. It has the MMI injection system on it. I have checked intake manifold gaskets for leaks and do not find any. I checked for any ECM codes at the odometer and appear to have none. Rarely it will run smooth but runs like a champ after idle. No upgrades I am aware of except for stage 1 air filter. Anyone have any suggestions what to look for? Will a tuner help? I am open to any suggestions.
Try cleaning the IAC. take air filter off and inside throttlebody, you will see 2 holes, one at 10 and the other at 2. I use Seafoam in a squirt bottle, then turn key on while spraying directly in the the holes, turn key off and let IAC come back to rest, then repeat as often as needed, til fluid runs clean. I also stuff a rag in throttlebody as mine doesn't want to run real smooth for 2 or 3 minutes after I start it.
Is this your first Harley? The touring models have what's called the "A" motor. It does not have a dynamic balancer, is rubber mounted to the frame, and will shake pretty good at idle. As long as it stays running at idle without touching the throttle and smooths out as soon as you start moving, you're fine. Very normal.
Yes this is my first! Been riding for years but my first Harley. It runs fine off of idle but ya she shakes at idle, not missing but shakes. Thanks for the input on the balancer. Love riding this bike and didn't know if something was wrong.
New mounts might help. That is also the last year with Cleve blocks for bushing in swingarm, which are junk, just mentioned it more for handling improvement. There's more that can be done but the 3 rubber mounts & the bushing upgrade is the best thing you can do to it this winter.

If you read about the new M8 motors, you will see that they added an internal balancer to take that shake out, but during testing, they had complaints that it didn't shake and no longer "felt" like a Harley, so they actually changed the balancer to eliminate only 75% of the shake and not 100%. They feared Harley riders wouldn't like it smooth.
Congrats on your first and welcome to the forum. You came to the right place. You will find all kinds of great information here but be careful, it will cost you money. As you read the threads about mods and upgrades, you'll want to try them.
