2008 FLHTCU Ring Gear Teeth
Have had the hot start grinding issue on my 2008 Ultra for quite some time which seemed to be progressively getting worse the last few weeks.
When I dropped the primary fluid it looked like a tooth for sure on the magnet but went ahead and pulled the primary cover to see the extent of the damage. Only one tooth was broken off the ring gear.
I've done a lot of reading on the issue and I'm curious what exactly caused this tooth to bust off. As for the repair whats the best way to go? New ring gear, new clutch basket or should I just go with a whole new clutch assembly? Is it safe to assume that I also need to replace the starter clutch and upgrade to the SE compensator?
I'm confused as to the conversation about an SE Compensator... I mean... if money is no issue and you are concerned that a weak or failing compensator is contributing to the failure or back lash on the starters pinion gear... thus breaking a tooth... then why not.
if nothing is wrong with the clutch... I'd say the shearing of the tooth had more to do with the compensator.
Once I took a look at the non SE (for our year bikes) compensator spring pack... I installed the SE Comp.
The ring gear used to be replaceable but HD doesn't offer it outside of the $500 assy. from what I can see.
