Kind of a strange pair of bikes Ive narrowed my choices down to, the 07 Softail Deluxe (Vivd Black or black/white) or the 07 electra Glide Standard (Vivid Black, or Red). I love the look of the Deluxe as delivered, but I really want bags and think that might ruin the good looks fo the Deluxe. The EGS isnt as fancy as the other Glies (especially the silver engine) but at $16k it seems to be a great value. I think Im about ready to take the plunge and trade in the Sportster, this weekend is an open house with $750 gift cards with every purchase.
So which would you choose? Honestly Ive never done any trips on my bike but I want to start! But I also want a bike thats good for commuting to work, going to the store, or just cruising around town too and can still go 2-400 miles in a day. The idea of the fairing seems nice when the weather starts to turn cold here in MI but not sure if it would make the ride hotter in the summer?
My choice would be the EGS. I've got a RK Custom with a fairing and radio/CD player. I've had Fatboy's and a Softail Custom, and a Lowrider. The fairing makes all the difference. You will not be sorry.
I currently have both the bikes you mention. I ride the Electra glide to work 90% of the time and the deluxe the other 10 %. I have to say the bagger is the way to go.I put a chopped windshield on it in the summer and I get plenty of air. Definetly warmer in the winter. The deluxe is fun to ride but aftera couple hundred miles on the bagger I am a lot more comfortable. Also the glide is far better for 2 up riding. I have the HD bagson the deluxe but they are small. Both great bikes but the bagger just serves my need much better.
I'd go with a touring bike if you are wanting to do some trippin. cruisin for a few hours for short rides makes no difference and you might like the deluxe but all in all I'd really go with a touring. Much more comfortable for trips.
Also with the ElectraGlide you can mod it to pretty much all the way up to an ultra if you want (over time).
Deluxe sits pretty low to the ground and..... (ok I'm gonna get flamed here) ... but since it is a bike which sits very low to the ground .... it has been said (and even by HD salespersons) that it is more of a 'chick bike' because it is an easy to sling bike and handles the height of women better than the average man. Personally I love the look of the deluxe. Love the WWW and the white/black color scheme. Personally think the EGS is a better looking bike and it is able to be customized much better over time than the deluxe. Don't let people sway you one way or the other about Deluxe being Chick bikes. A friend almost bought one .... he ended up buying a Road King Custom instead as he got a really good deal on one. But he is shorter and the Deluxe fit his frame very well. I only mentioned about the deluxe being a 'chick bike' because I've heard this at least a dozen times. (if you like what you ride... makes no difference to me). But I would really say .... the touring line for longer road trips are gonna be much more 'comfortable' in the long run than the softail line.
Weight: Deluxe = 724; EGS = 772 (about 50lbs difference)
Saddle Height: Deluxe = 24.5"; EGS = 27.3" (close to 3" difference)
MPG: Deluxe Rated at 53hwy/34cty; EGS rated at 45.0hwy/32.5cty
Engine: Deluxe is a 96B which is mounted to the frame and balanced; EGS is 96 which is rubber-mounted
Like I said.... I know you have done your research on this as far as what each one has and what each one comes with. Not an easy decision to make that is for sure. To me it is a jump goin from a sportster to a softail. I would think long about whether you will be happy with the softail for a long time or would end up wanting to upgrade to a touring after one or 2 longer road trips. I'd bite the bullet and get the touring one. They are awesome!
Good Luck in your decision... and be sure to let us know what you get!
Ive heard people say alot of women ride Deluxe's, but never really heard it called a "chick bike". But C'mon, I currently ride a Sportster which many "bikers" (which Im not, just an average guy) call a "chick bike" so..... Im also about 5'10 so while Im not tall, I do fit on either bike. I didnt realize the 96b got 8MPG better then the a?
Id really love an Strreet Glide, but cant bring myself to spend $21k after fees on a bike (yet).
I don't know who came up with the MPG but my EGS gets about 45mpg and the deluxe gets about 41 and the glide cruises alot better at 80 than the deluxe. If you gonna be on the interstate alot that should be a condideration.
