Default Fuel Gauge Problems INFO??

So on my 03 Ultra Classic I noticed that my fuel gauge stays on full for about 100 miles then starts to go down and when I get near empty the gauge gets to be correct. Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed simple? Or do I just deal with it until it stops working?

it could be that the float is sticking or hanging up on a hose- you could try using a long zip tie ( something rigid, but not hard enough to poke a hole in a hose) and just kinda poke around the gauge float/fuel pump and see if you can free it.

if you look at a parts manual, you'll get an idea of how this stuff is positioned in teh fuel tank without opening it up

many of us use Ronnies for part diagrams

i assume your ultra is EFI,

if you are not hip to ronnie's, you should bookmark their main page

Thanks I'll do some checking on it and see if I can do something about it. Wonder if it could have some build up on it and gas treatment might help?

or with a 1/2 tank try rocking the bike side to side the slosh the fuel around.

I've done that and also when I fill it up I put the gas in as fast as I can until it get closer to full. Has not helped.

Perhaps float arm is bent down too much causing it to ride/read higher until the level has dropped sufficiently to read closer to true

Don't want to be pessimistic, but my bet the gauge is bad. My 02 EG gauge did pretty much what you're describing only after three years. Did all the checking as has been suggested, only leaving me with "the gauge" itself. New part...problem solved. But hey...I learned how to get all that gadgetry out of the tank, and put it back in...correctly!

FWIW, my 08 had a fuel gauge problem under warranty, took them a few months to replace EVERYTHING and finally get it to work.

so in other words, it could take a bit of effort, I would replace the gauge first (how much does it cost?)
