So on my 03 Ultra Classic I noticed that my fuel gauge stays on full for about 100 miles then starts to go down and when I get near empty the gauge gets to be correct. Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed simple? Or do I just deal with it until it stops working?
it could be that the float is sticking or hanging up on a hose- you could try using a long zip tie ( something rigid, but not hard enough to poke a hole in a hose) and just kinda poke around the gauge float/fuel pump and see if you can free it.
if you look at a parts manual, you'll get an idea of how this stuff is positioned in teh fuel tank without opening it up
Don't want to be pessimistic, but my bet the gauge is bad. My 02 EG gauge did pretty much what you're describing only after three years. Did all the checking as has been suggested, only leaving me with "the gauge" itself. New part...problem solved. But hey...I learned how to get all that gadgetry out of the tank, and put it back in...correctly!
