Default Front and rear wheels interchangeable?

The rear rim (laced wheels) on my 2000 RK Classic has gotten a little rough. I want to replace it this winter, and it might make finding one easier if I were able to use a front wheel. Any one that can answer this?

I think you'll find the rear hub is wider than the front hub. In addition the pulley side of a rear hub has larger diameter fixing screw holes than the rotor side and both sides of the front hub. You can always have both wheels rebuilt with new spokes and rims, refinishing the hubs while the wheels are dismantled.

Thank you Sir. That is just what I was looking for. Maybe I'll just look for a rim as I am capable of respoking the wheel. I replaced my front spokes last year with polished stainless. A big improvement. Not sure I wanted to spend that much money on the rear wheel but if I have it apart I would not reuse the cadmium plated spokes.

Talking

What man has done once he can do again! It's only money and you're obviously the right chap for the job. I'm sure your bike will look better with matching wheels - and will thank you for doing just that!

When I did the front wheel it was my first time. Very challenging, but that was why I did it. Had to walk away from it several times. Once I understood the theory it became simple. The rear wheel should be a piece of cake. Thanks for the encouragement.

Thumbs up

My pleasure. Building wheels is a black art, so well done for mastering it. We will of course need photos of the finished wheel in due course!
