One remark. I had on my Heritage Classic a Skala bluetooth headset for both my passenger as myself. Three functions: person to person, GPS voices and telephone. No music function or whatsoever. It was a real disaster. Bluetooth was unpredictable in connection with iPhone, unpredictable in connection with my GPS device and the only reliable function was person to person. Nowadays I have a Ultra Limited 2015 and I am wired as my passenger is. For me NO WIRELESS system anymore, the HD system is extremely reliable in all functions. The only thing is, that I am looking for 2 extra similar headsets for our second helmets, which are full face system helmets. Depending of the season we ride with full face system helmets or half helmets. But except the expensive HD brand I have not found similar headsets yet with the HD plugs. Suggestions are more than welcome.
Based on information I've read on this forum and from information in the instruction sheet, it looks like:
77147-98A - USA version
77156-98A - International version (kit comes with two headsets)
77117-10 - has better speakers and smaller microphone. Also comes with CD to update radio software. Update software is also available on the Harley-Davidson website.
It's weird how HD is funny about their part numbers sometimes.
If you buy the new improved Headset off the shelf it is part number 77117-10 (or 76000260 apparently) but if you get the same headset in a box, in the bike, included at the time of purchase its part number 77147-98A.
I just checked and the new set included with my 17RGU is 77147-98A on the outside of the box, and when opened... it's 77117-10 inside the box.
Same part, but the 77147-98A version does not have the Update CD inside (because new radios don't need it).
Clear as mud.
Also... as mentioned, check out the touring classifieds. Keep an eye open and every week or so someone will be selling two sets for 100-130 shipped typically.
My last set was bought for 50 shipped...
My 2 cents ..... You mention you might want the ability to have bike to bike communication. Biggest drawback to the Sena units is you can only communicate with another rider who also has a Sena. However, your 2017 RGU did not come with the CB module and by the looks of your bike photo you did not have the dealer add it. To cut cost down the MOCO now only offers CB standard on the CVO models of RGs and Limiteds Most of the guys I ride with have CB's and we use them constantly.

Sena intercom will connect with other Bluetooth devices.
I will NOT go with the HD set again. If you go the J&M route, make sure you get the set specific to your style of helmet. I love the one I have for my full face helmet - no boom mic constantly shifting out of position!

Well my wife bought me the CB setup for my 2017 Ultra for Christmas. I was not going to get it, although I am a road captain for local rides and CB's are what everyone uses. Too pricey. But it was a great Christmas present!

This post sparked my curiosity... I have a '14 Limited and the headset that came with it is still in the box. It lists 77147-98A on the box
Inside the box, this is what I have.
Tried reading the instructions page seeing what model is listed, but (without opening the bag) this is pretty much all I can see.
So, is this headset the newer/better 77117-10?
Either way, it's BNIB and I'll never use it. It also fits into a Medium USPS Flat Rate Priority box and ships anywhere in the US for $13.45
75 bucks shipped and it's yours...

Man, that's interesting. I have the same white box but a different set of "Instructions".
The title of my document states: Boom! Audio Full Helmet Premium Music and Communications Headset. Kit numbers: 77117-10, 76000602.
Mine came with a MY17 bike so maybe that's the difference? I dunno now, but should be the same headset regardless. If it has a "small" mic it's the newer model....
