Default Question: HD tethered headset comparison

I just purchased a new 17 RGU. It came with one tethered headset, model number 77147-98A. I would like to purchase another one for the better half. So, there are a few for sale on this and other sites, but I can't find the number in the HD catalog. The parts guy at HD told me that one is pretty old technology, and the new ones that are available are much better. That part number is: 7717-10.

I just don't want to drop $75 - $100 for old technology, if the newer model is that much better at $190.

Any Comments are appreciated.

Other than talking with each other what do you want to use them for? You may want to consider some Bluetooth devices for your helmet for music and conversation. This is the route I went as I also upgraded my stereo. Nice not having the wires.

It would be great to go wireless, but as I understand it, Bluetooth is not a friend of the Boom system, only your phone. So if I want full functionality, I have to go wired... unless there is some new technology out there that I am not aware of.

Also, it's not just for talking to a passenger. I listen to music while I ride on longer trips, and I am kind of particular about the quality of the audio.

Also, I am looking for the best solution to have two-way communication with a passenger or another rider in my group (possibly another bike), and still have quality stereo signal for my music.

The current tethered version that came with my 17 RG, has that, but as I understand things, it's yesterdays news.

Just looking for some clarity before I make another purchase.

Thanks,
Brad

I have, and that is the one that I really wanted, but I am told that it will only connect to my phone, with partial connectivity to the bike. In other words, the bike can only talk to one bluetooth device at once. So much of the hand controls on the bars are disabled.

If I have misunderstood, or there are other options... I'm all ears.

Thanks,
Brad

There is a couple threads on the sena in the Rushmore section you might want to read. Not sure but I think it will work for you. My son and I use the sena to intercom with each other if we ride together. I have not got the freewire yet to connect to my bike yet though.

Based on information I've read on this forum and from information in the instruction sheet, it looks like:

77147-98A - USA version

77156-98A - International version (kit comes with two headsets)

77117-10 - has better speakers and smaller microphone. Also comes with CD to update radio software. Update software is also available on the Harley-Davidson website.

I've had both of the styles you're asking about and the newer ones are worth the money.
And when I say worth the money, I mean worth the 50-75 dollars I usually pay buying brand new ones people didn't want in the classifieds...

Pro tip.

The speaker quality is pretty good on the newer style.
