Default 911-Help! HELP!Help!

My friend pulled of his ignition switch from 17RG and it came off without any issues. When he put it back on it was in the wrong position. Everything is out of alignment and we can not get it back off. We still need to put the accessory switch/ignition cover back on. Can't find any information on how to pull it out after it is out of alignment.
Thanks,
Brian

Use the search feature and put in "ignition switch alignment". You'll get a lot of threads and how to's. Here's a couple to get you started:

There are also youtube videos - here's one, and there are more:

Hopefully your '17 model isn't a lot different.

if you look at the stem, you will see that the tangs are differently shaped, look down the hole and you can use a screw driver to turn the cams one at a time to get them oriented correctly.

this comes up almost everyday..

Good advice here. This happened to my FIL's bike a few months back. I used a mid/large size flathead to get the tumblers all aligned again. It's a PITA, but an easy fix.

You are pressing the tab on the bottom to release it?

You will have to push the little tang on the underside of the **** and turn it 180 degrees one way or the other while gently pulling up. It'll come out, just be patient.

Working on them frequently, I have the alignment tools for the new and old style (Rushmore ignitions have thinner barrels than the older bikes) as it makes it easier to not only align them, but to be able to cycle the ignition without the **** in place.

I think once I get it out I'll be good. My friend pulled it out very easy, but when he put it back in, it was not in the same position as when he took it out. Now it will not come out at all. That's why I refused to remove mine when I installed an accessory switch on my 15SG. His is totally out of alignment because it will turn in all positions but the radio will not turn off in the off position and the handle bars will not lock. I finally got the radio to turn off after messing around with it for several hours. I sent him a picture and info from my service manual.
Thanks,
Brian
