I really like my 2014 so far. Have changed the exhaust and handlebars a couple times. I might go for a M8 some day but not for a couple years at least.

I also like my Rushmore. Don't forget police bikes, they are cheaper generally than an FLHR of similar age and miles.

Really comprehensive thread right here. A lot of different answers but then again, all Road Kings rock.

After looking at lots of bikes last winter and spring, I decided I wanted the Rushmore updates (primarily the newer bags), so 2014 and up. I ended up with a low mileage 2014, and am very happy with it so far. This is my first Harley, so I don't have any experience with previous models.

If I were buying now, I would take a hard look at a new 2016 as dealers seems to be discounting them. If you are looking to buy used, there should be some good deals as people trade in for the new M8.

It all depends on what you want and your budget.

Get an low mile 02 dephi.. Best crank, still has timken bearing and hot forged crank. Needs tensioner replacement every 40K and the head breathers are not the best but with good suspension / wheels it handles pretty ever bit as good as the 09.. Shifts better too.

'09-'13 are bascily the same, think the 96" became 103" in '11, but is not too big a deal to make a 96 a 103/107. '14-'16 (Rushmore) got more power, better front forks and new style bags. '17 got the new motor. Newer is better... the only year before '09 I'd think about would be a '02 unless it is a money or nostalgia thing.

09 or newer. As stated if you can swing a rushmore than by all means go that route. I have a 2010 and a 2016. I thought the 96" motor was a dog without at least a cam upgrade if you ride 2 up. That motor is being changed over to a 107 over this winter so that problem is solved. The 103" in the rushmore is fine the way it is.
