The best way to keep a snap ring from flying off is to use the right size tips that are hardened. Cheaper snap ring plier tips tend to flex in the smaller diameters. That said, I keep lever pin snap rings in stock. They usually get bent if you aren't careful to spread them apart just enough and no more. Once they're bent, I don't reuse them.
I far prefer these over ones with the interchangeable tips because these don't **** and twist the way the interchange types do. Several of the above are very small. If necessary, I could easily file one down smaller, but I haven't found that to be necessary so far.
I have a Channel Lock brand set that have many different sets of interchangeable tips in straight, angled and 90 degree. Also can be switched from internal to external. I think I paid less than $30 for the kit.
