I have a '17 RK. It is in hibernation right now. I'm looking to add some extra storage for some 7-10 day trips I have planned. I have the detachable mounting hardware on the bike. I really want to change the seat on the bike for next season. I ride solo and was looking to add a solo seat. I really don't want to spring for a full tour-pak. For my weekend rides the saddlebags are fine. I am looking for something like the HD Overnight bag or something similar from Tourmaster or some other third party. The question really isn't about what bag, but how to set up the bike to accept the soft bag. I see a few options.
1. Get a new seat with passenger pillion add the detachable luggage rack and sissy bar. This allows bags to be mounted fore and aft on the sissy bar.
2. Get solo seat and add a detachable solo rack. This keeps a nice clean line on the bike when not attached. But I have concerns for the straps damaging the paint on the rear fender.
Are there any other options that anyone thinks are better. Like I said this is a setup that will only be used 2-3 times a year. Thanks for your time.
It seems to me that with a luggage rack you have the capacity, as you noted to place luggage behind your seat and on the rack. Harley makes some pretty nice pieces that could work....I purchased the overnight bag myself recently. GL.
For solo trips on my RK I use the HD Luggage Rack Rear Passenger combo. I put a T-bag knockoff on the rear seat. It wraps around the backrest and doesn't move. I have used it on the Luggage Rack as well but I can't use it as a backrest then. Works well. On trips with the wife we now use the quick detach tour pak and the Tbag goes on top

t bag is a brand name....and kinda generic term like kleenex
look at the tbag website- I have the big one- it was about $50 used
I tour weeks at a time with tent, sleeping bag and cooking gear.
That's a Tbag on the seat ( doubles as backrest- adjust maps in pocket for lumbar), with a tbag roll bag on top.
and a sac by HD roll on the tourpak- sleeping bag and light leathers
green bag is the tent, thermarest fits in saddlebag
