This is exactly what I did, old tire pump and cut off the hose with the lever lock on it, added a shrader valve with a small hose clamp
Works perfect!

I found a 6-8" tube extension on Ebay. Once it is screwed on it is easy to check and add air. I thought it was hard on my 02 but even a bigger PITA on my 2010. IMHO this is the one thing I really, really hate about the bike.

Yep, that works. In my saddlebag, I keep a Slime Digital Compressor that has a straight hose end like that, it works also.
It's obvious that lots of people don't understand the woes of getting to the rear tire valve stem on a bagger with tubed spoke wheels. On the front wheel, the valve stem is a little to the side, no problem at all. The rear has a lot more spokes, and the valve stem is crammed right in among them. Royal PITA.
The easiest way to check the tire psi that I have found, is my Garmin TPMS via my Garmin LM390. Touch the screen, check psi on the fly, low level alarms warn you if there is a problem.
However you do it, a good tire inspection is a must. Up on the jack, spin the tire around, and look carefully. Go ahead, fuss some more at that rear valve stem, then move on.

I have had good experiences with gauges that have a right angle valve. Easier to seat on the Schrader valve. Many options in quality and price though. Good luck.

Fwiw, my gauge/chuck has a hose and is a straight fitting. I can snake it through the wheel, several spokes away, and then come down straight onto the fitting. Awkward and clumsy, but it works.
