I recently purchased the Willie G. Skull derby cover for my 2016 Road Glide Special. Without thinking much about what might be involved I began to unscrew the original cover and much to my surprise fluid starts leaking on my garage floor.
WTF???
I'm fairly new to m/c's and I didn't realize the derby cover had a purpose other than flash.
Was that engine oil? How do I go about replacing the derby cover without draining the oil?
If you remove the derby cover with the bike on the side stand leaning to that side it is likely to lose some primary fluid especially if it was over filled a bit. Get someone to hold it upright while you do it and you will loose little to none.
Not to be a smart *** but you may want to get a manual or at least learn a little about the bike before removing and replacing things
Make sure to replace the gasket it is a one time use. Yes the fluid will spill out on the stand you need to make sure the bike is in upright position either have someone hold it or invest in a jack not much money and will come in handy when cleaning also.

Don't know what kind of gasket is on the 16 model but I've reused the rubber and flat gaskets numerous times and never a leak. Cleaning the gasket and mating surfaces is key.
A block of 2x6 under the jiffy stand gets my 07 up enough to not leak any fluid.

I learned the hard way the parts guy said they were multi use gaskets after 3 trips to the dealer (26 miles away) the second parts guy said it is a one time use gasket. They compress and once compressed they are stretched out. it is a $5.00 kit I believe and come with oil and trans gaskets. yes the aftermarket covers use a flat style gasket and I believe they are multi use gaskets but OEM covers require a different type.

Sorry just seen you said rubber gaskets. This was my experience when changing mine out. Yes a 2x will work fine that is what I used the first time but man does a jack come in handy for $89 it has already paid for itself. 2016 FLTRXS black quartz.
