They're all great choices. But for the long haul. The RG is the better bike. The fairing being far away is a non issue. Controls are on the bars. On a recent trip last year it was an ultra 2 SG and a RK. I'm the only RG. After 600 miles in day I was the only one not beaten down by the mileage. There is a difference. I had a SG. Loved it. Great bike. Wind management and handling goes to the RG.
But like I said. All good choices. Ride a RG. On a windy day in traffic. Next to trucks. Lol..
I have a 2016 Ultra Limited.I plug my ipod into the stock radio and it sounds very good at highway speeds. If I use the FM radio on the head unit the sound is not as good.I am probably going to put an amp and upgraded speakers because I can't leave well enough alone.
It seems your soul wants the RK and your pragmatic brain wants the Ultra. Life happens, if after a year you decided it was the wrong choice, trade it in. I found that when I satisfy the soul, my ride is therapeutic. When I satisfy my pragmatism, I'm kind of bored.
As an aside. I keep a set of practical lower fairings for the longer rides on my Road Kings. Only take 10 minutes to put them on. Not only are they pragmatic for cruising, I think they look pretty good.
